Major language families By number of languages. Follow each language ’s path from bush to roots and discover how closely languages are related to each other. I took a French linguistics course my senior year of college, and I soon came to realize that there is much more than meets the eye when it comes to languages.
The largest language families (those with over languages ) are listed below (Ethnologue). World ’s largest language families.
There are 5languages in this group, and together they account for close to percent of all world languages (assuming that there are some 9languages in the world). However, there are exceptions where an indo European language is dominant, such as Equatorial Guinea, where of the population can speak it. An example of the opposite would be Nigeria,.
The European arm of the tree splits off into Slavic, Romance and Germanic branches. Here you can see the relationship between different Slavic languages. There are three main language families: Indo-European (Includes English).
Sino-Tibetan (Includes Chinese).
Afro-Asiatic (Includes Arabic). Those that have no known relatives (or for which family relationships are only tentatively proposed) are called language isolates, essentially language families consisting of a single language. In general, it is assumed that language isolates have relatives or had relatives at some point in their history but at a time depth too great for linguistic comparison to recover them.
With English, one can reach approximately one billion people in the world. What is linguistic family? Burushaski and Nahali are found in the Indian subcontinent. The title old world language families is a bit misleading, but keep in mind that dozens of large language families are excluded here.
Sizes of the branches represent the recorded native speakers before year 0. It is a branch of the larger Tupian language family, which includes another languages. Georgian is the biggest Kartvelian language, and it is the only Caucasian language with an ancient literary tradition. Its beautiful and unique alphabet is also quite old—it is thought to have been adapted from Aramaic as far back as the third century AD. While not a language island in the same sense as Basque,.
Language trees for the language lovers! I’ve gathered pretty much all the data for this from ethnologue. And if anyone finds some important language missing let me know!
Naturally most tiny languages didn’t make it on the graph, aww.
The usual situation is that the ancestral language was not a written language and the only evidence we have are its modern descendants. This larger, more ancient family is known as the Indo-European family and it includes almost all European languages (but not Basque, Hungarian, or Finnish), and many other languages of Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. They only started splitting off from their common ancestor, Common Slavic (or Proto-Slavic), when Cyril and Methodius standardized the language , creating what is now called Old Church Slavonic , and created an alphabet for it.
To my humble opinion, when you have an ambition to write down a “tree of languages”, at least you have to know the thing precisely and thoroughly. Coming up with a great design idea from scratch is hard work! Linguistic geography is a very fascinating subject, because, studying the connections between the various languages, it helps us to connect the roots of different populations in the world and often offers us an unexpected view. The people of the northern Europe region who spoke Old High German converted the Latin word into its own: flegel. The people who spoke Low German or Middle Dutch contrived the word: vlegel.
Old English used the Old High German form of flegel with a slight variation to become flighel or fligel. Unfortunately, serviceable maps that depict only language families are difficult to find. Most images available online show a combination of families and sub- families , splitting Indo-European, for example, into its main divisions. Such a portrayal is of little use for.
Of course, the protolanguages of different families also had ancestors, which must have been members of older language families.
